Our God is Marching On!

This morning I made a decision. I chose to arise and worship my great God! My soul was disappointed, not as much over who won the elections, but that half of our nation voted contrary to God’s standard of righteousness according to His Word. However, my spirit resonated with the words of Habakkuk 3:18, “Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.”

I have been reflecting on Jeremiah’s plight in the book of Lamentations. My, what a terrible mess Jerusalem was in! Most everyone was just trying to survive and looking out only for himself. I realize without knowing the God of my salvation, I would be in that same “boat”. How full of terror and panic they must have felt! I am not excusing the reasons for them getting in that predicament (forsaking God and His ways), but just trying to identify with their situation without Him. In the midst of such a situation, Jeremiah recalled to his mind some truths of God and found hope. We have a Hope that we can offer to the hopeless!

“Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!” The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, To the soul who seeks Him. It is good that one should hope and wait quietly For the salvation of the LORD.” Lamentations 3:22-26 NKJV

Just last week, we had a powerful time of worship at our state capitol. Today I have been reminded of the words that we sang and declared together from that seat of government – “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”. Be encouraged with these words: His truth is marching on; He has sounded forth the trumpet that will never call retreat; Our God is marching on; Glory, glory, Hallel –Yah!

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps,
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps:
His day is marching on.

I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
“As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel,
Since God is marching on.”

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! Be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free,
While God is marching on.

He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
He is Wisdom to the mighty, He is Succour to the brave,
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of Time His slave,
Our God is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Our God is marching on.
